[LMBTO] Sweden, FYR Macedonia and their pleather Eurovision outfits...

That weird mix of plastic and leather seems (to my eye at least) to be making a comeback via the Eurovision Song Contest!  Is that some sort of black straitjacket that Benjamin is wearing?  Not quite sure how this look tied in with his winning entry at Melodifestivalen but it didn't hurt in the slightest, as "Dance You Off" shone literally very, very brightly:

Now I am not a rabid fan of the Swedish selection process, unlike seemingly most of Eurovision fandom - on the night of the MF Final, I was watching Alexander Rybak crush all Norwegian opposition in preference to seeing Benjamin coast to his predicted victory.  Having said that, I read enough news articles to keep abreast of what was going on and I had gleaned that the selection of acts available to the current powerhouse of Eurovision wasn't the strongest this year.  It perhaps made the victory for the guy above a little easier but having watched the performance of "Dance You Off", I would have to say that it was a deserved win:
Why do I say that?  Because, to be honest, the competition was not in the same league of slickness, entertainment or visual excellence - there were better vocalists but in what (for me at least) is always a light entertainment show rather than a pure musical contest, Benjamin's routine was vastly more memorable.  I do have to clarify something though - this entry is not in the same league as anything that Sweden have sent to Eurovision since 2013.

This is superficial pop - it is so much style over substance that it hurts.

Don't get me wrong, the whole routine is spot on, it works amazingly well, he hits every camera angle, he bobs his head in that comical way exactly at the right time and his bizarre 'forward moonwalk effect' is endearing but do you know who the real star of "Dance You Off" is?
The Lighting Rig!

I assume that the whole thing is portable and can be taken to Lisbon - if so, Sweden have got the jump on most of the other delegations with their staging, taking advantage of the 'no LED screen' rule at the Altice Arena.  The light show is very basic in concept but extremely effective in keeping you watching Benjamin strut his stuff across the screen - you want to see how effective it is without the main protagonist in the way?  Here's a superb Powerpoint representation:

For me, seeing how the lighting worked was more enjoyable that the performance itself!  Visually, "Dance You Off" has a lighting engineer working overtime - unfortunately it looks like the same guy wrote the lyrics too:

I see that look in your eyes
But I ain’t feeling no pressure, pressure
Feels like I’m stuck here in time
While I’ve been trying to forget ya
Forget ya

Just wanna da-da-dance you off
So don’t you da-da-dare wait up
Cause I just wanna feel the mood
Girl with anyone but you

And I might now
Yeah I might now

Just trying to have myself a time
So I just don’t care if you mind
Cause I just wanna feel the mood
Girl with anyone but you

And I might now
Yeah I might now

Treating you good we were gold
I dug you like you were treasure
So don’t act like I’m the cruel one
When I know you know better

And I, oh I used to think that
You were worth the best in life
Cause I loved it, I loved it
Feels like I’m stuck here in time
While I’ve been trying to forget ya

Just wanna da-da-dance you off
So don’t you da-da-dare wait up
Cause I just wanna feel the mood
Girl with anyone but you

And I might now
Yeah I might now

Just trying to have myself a time
So I just don’t care if you mind
Cause I just wanna feel the mood
Girl with anyone but you

And I might now
Yeah I might now

I’m just gonna dance you off the floor
I used to think that you were worth my every night
Every night

Just wanna da-da-dance you off
So don’t you da-da-dare wait up
Cause I just wanna feel the mood
Girl with anyone but you

And I might now
Yeah I might now

Just trying to have myself a time
So I just don’t care if you mind
Cause I just wanna feel the mood
Girl with anyone but you

I might now
I might now

And everyone was being snooty about "X My Heart"!  I cannot imagine it took long to write these words and even though it fits perfectly for a slice of simple pop, they are totally forgettable.  If it wasn't for that light show, I think that Sweden might be in real trouble this year.  If the Swedes can have this exact same routine going in Lisbon then I cannot see anything other than certain Final qualification and a almost certain top ten, mainly because it is Sweden - that, however, would be classified as a national catastrophe for this nation looking for their seventh win to tie with Ireland.  I will make a bold claim now:

Sweden will not be winning in Lisbon with "Dance You Off"

I think that we will have another "You" scenario - MF 2018 producing another slice of teen pop with a good looking guy, a slick routine and a chart friendly song but we have reached the very limit of the successful Swedish formula here.  This is likely to give 'the best NF in the world' a massive reset for 2019 and hopefully will see some variation to the current gold standard 'good looking man with a visual treat' next year across the heats in February and March.
To be honest, the more I watch this routine, the more I laugh, especially at the mannerisms, nods and 'dancing' - this is descending into 'press next track' territory for me and Sweden 2018 will not stay in my memory for much past May 13th...

Another of the Eurovision 43 that likes their outfits shiny and 'leathery' are FYR Macedonia, in particular Marija out front - an interesting look and very, very pink...
Apparently it was down to this lady, stylist Milena Tanaskoska:

I'm not too sure how you'd describe what the lovely Ms Ivanovska is wearing - a fluorescent leotard?  It does show off those wonderful legs of hers but I do prefer the silver jacket with the eye effect all over it!  See what you think as you flick through those pictures (above - see the arrow on the right) and then take in Eye Cue's video:

It really is all about Marija, isn't it?  The change of style, musically and sartorially, makes for a really interesting watch and listen here - this lady also knows how to draw the eye of the viewer, flirting down the lens for all she is worth.  To be fair to her, she is merely expertly acting out some really 'straight to the point' suggestive lyrics:

Come and take me
I can show you how it's done
Come and take me
When no one is around
Come and take me
I can show you how it's done
We'll be lost and we'll be ---

If you want me I can tell you
What it's all about
You're standing in the shadow
Wondering why
You're in the dark

I want a deeper, deeper love
I want you by my side
Just let me go deeper
(Go deeper)
Go deeper

Come and take me
I can show you how it's done
Come and take me
When no one is around
Come and take me
I can show you how it's done
We'll be lost and we'll be found
We'll be lost and we'll be found
Found

Have you ever thought about it?
We went too far
Now there's no way back
No way back
Have you ever thought about it?
We went too far
Now there's no way back
No way

I wish you trust your intuitions
And let the the journey start

I want a deeper, deeper love
I want you by my side
Just let me go deeper
Go deeper
(Go deeper)

Come and take me
I can show you how it's done
Come and take me
When no one is around
Come and take me
I can show you how it's done
We'll be lost and we'll be found
We'll be lost and we'll be
Baby, you and I, we'll be lost and found

Have you ever thought about it?
We went too far
Now there's no way back
No way back
Have you ever thought about it?
We went too far
Now there's no way back
No way back

We'll be lost and we'll be

Talking about the feelings of love or the actual mechanics?  Bojan Trajkovski obviously knows his partner can perform in such a way that those words come to life but in a subtle way, rather than too sexually as it could be done by another singer.  Marija has this look throughout the video that keeps you watching her and only her, allowing Bojan to pull faces and drummer Darko Dimitrov to play his drums in the style of Gorillaz drummer Russel Hobbs.
She carries the shoot and the song throughout, her voice sounding superb across a multitude of musical genres:

Intro - traditional C&W-influenced sound, very calm, very peaceful;
20 seconds in - Reggae, yes reggae, that staple of Eurovision -
slow and sensual, showing off Bojan and Darko's musicianship;
55 seconds - back to the C&W for almost thirty seconds;
80 seconds - EDM, lots of pace, a more modern sound and then...
100 seconds - change of clothing for Marija and a return to the reggae, making this seem a bit 'harder' with the pink leotard and bold eyeshadow;
130 seconds - a bit of the C&W before more or less staying with the EDM right until the end of the song.

Are you seeing a possible issue here?  At least three different styles of music in this track and it isn't until we get two thirds of the way through that we stop chopping and changing, sticking with one genre (almost) for the last 50 seconds.  Now I really like this and it doesn't have the same jarring effect that some Eurovision songs that do odd things with the music have had on my ear - this track sprung to mind,  combining a reggae beat and then a different tempo:

"Lost and Found" flows a lot better than "Shine A Little Light" (although looking back at Bianca - what might have been), mainly because it doesn't sound like two songs having undergone a cut and shut.  However, what I am willing to accept and love the sound of might not appeal to a lot of listeners - chop and changing between beats and musical types is likely to confuse and confound some voters, enough that they will not vote for Eye Cue.  When this band was announced as the FYR Macedonia representatives, I knew from their past material and tv appearances that they would nail this live, and at a recent event where they picked up an award, that proved to be the case:

Somehow that classically cut black jumpsuit looks so much better than the pink outfit in the video but that is my personal preference - what this performance did show was that Marija deals with the cross-cut nature of the music and lyrics live effortlessly, so how this will sound and look in Lisbon will not be an issue at all.

The main point of conjecture is how this will sound to a new listener - if you get two or three listens of this song, "Lost And Found" sounds so natural, so cool, so infectious and so dynamic.

Marija is the lynchpin of "Lost and Found"  and she has to be the focus of the staging in Lisbon.  In my opinion, I would lose the leotard - keeping the look and style of the visuals simple (perhaps with the silver 'eye' jacket) will allow everyone watching to concentrate on what is happening with the music and the song, perhaps with the little 'chorus dance routine' thrown in.  I think that if she is kept in that 'pink overload' get-up, that will become the entire focus of this entry and her amazing vocals and the interest generated by the change in music and rhythm will be ignored.  Unfortunately Eye Cue find themselves in SF1 and any kind of 'disadvantage' could see them not qualifying for the Final, given the competitive nature of Monday/Tuesday night - a very unfortunate turn of events, given that this entry is really interesting to listen to, an absolute delight to watch and possibly the strongest FYR Macedonia entry Eurovision has seen since "Crno i belo"...

------------------------------------------------

As far as placings in Lisbon are concerned, a certain Swede performing in front of half of the 'Piccadilly Lights' will capture the vote of many men and women who like light and fluffy pop songs and good looking guys.  Were the entries to be reversed and the nations entered into the fray with the opposition's songs, Eye Cue would be looking at a certain top ten and getting lots of critical plaudits for "Lost And Found", whereas Benjamin Ingrosso would be written off already as a DNQ.  Such is the trials and tribulations of representing a nation that has only qualified once in the last ten Contests, as against one who has only been out of the top five once in the last seven.
Personally, there is only one track that I will remember after Lisbon and will delight in playing on any Eurovision 2018 playlist...

In the 'Battle Of The Pleather', my thumbs up would go to Eye Cue and "Lost And Found" for a bold and really interesting composition, musically, lyrically and visually.
