Two years in a row as Online Press through the UK Delegation...
My ticket into the wonderful world of the Eurovision Fortnight!
As regular listeners/readers will have known, I received Online Press Accreditation for Turin via the UK delegation (thank you to Lucy Waller, Head of Press, yet again) for Eurovision 2022. How I cover it will be much like 2021 in Rotterdam as I am still at home in the UK - the situation in Turin was far too chaotic, I wouldn't have been press for much more of the time there anyway and if I was spending time as a fan, I would have wanted my other half Ellen to be there too. So Online coverage it is and the situation is a little bit different to last, as you may or may not know...
First Rehearsals are not open to accredited press
So I would not have been able to access the Onsite Press facilities at the PalaOlimpico until Wednesday 4th May anyway and I can do a lot more here in the UK in the meantime. As it is, you will see all the news sites making the best of it, cutting and pasting all the Official images and the only source of videos (EBU TikTok) into their articles. What I plan to do is give you a flavour for the one thing that us 'journos' were able to do with our accreditation today (and for the next few days):
Watch the Meet & Greet sessions for each artist
All the questions to the singers during these sessions were either posed by the hosts Mario Acampa and Laura Carusino, or by whoever was in the online room. Even I posted a question for each of the nine acts today - and FOUR were answered! I'll point those out as we go along but we'll start with the lady who'll be opening the show in SF1...
ALBANIA (Ronela Hajati - "Sekret")
Now there is a chance that this is NOT her actual look for Eurovision 2022, given that she was the first to answer one of my questions, that being:
"How has today been for you? Were there any issues that need sorting or was everything perfection?"
Her reply was she is a perfectionist and that she will always find something to improve in her performances, despite her never being comfortable in watching herself! She did say that she would make some changes with her hair and costume for the 2nd rehearsal - that would also connect with an answer she gave elsewhere, in that she revealed a secret in her music video and there would be another one for the actual performance in Turin. The other main point to come out of the Meet & Greet was that Eurovision is a big step for her and she is hoping that success over the next fortnight might lead to an international record deal. She seemed very happy with how the day had gone, so I am confident that we will be seeing a great show on 2nd rehearsal day...
LATVIA (Citi Zēni - "Eat Your Salad")
It is rare to get all of this group clearly in one picture, so I have chosen the only one to do that as taken by the excellent EBU photographers today. Theirs was a particularly entertaining Meet & Greet but I was not as fortunate as I was in Amsterdam in having the opportunity to 'talk to them' today. The guys were, as always, up for the chat and two points of interest came to light. The first was that man mountain Roberts managed to rip his trousers during the rehearsal, much in the same way as he did at Supernova, but he had red pants on to hide the fact, and the second was that they wanted to enthuse and pump up 200 million people in the Final. The pictures lead me to believe that their staging will be much the same as it was in Supernova and all the pre-parties but 2nd rehearsals will confirm that...
LITHUANIA (Monika Liu - "Sentamentai")
Now today started off with a potential downer for Monika, as we learnt from the Lithuanian Head of Delegation that her proposed staging was not possible any more due to some technical issues at the venue. There have been reports that the movable arches mimicking the sun are NOT moving as they should, which may affect several staging's this year. Whatever the reason and how much it has affected Lithuania, Monika did not seem affected by it unduly during her Meet & Greet. She was her usual exuberant charismatic self when answering the questions posed by the host, much in the same way as she was when I interviewed her in London. I didn't get a question through to her this time but she was a mine of information...
I was trying to see what they thought about those who might be watching their performance as a one off in the SF/Final but their answer focussed more on fans who knew where to find their material. They felt that those in Balkan nations would understand the Slovene song content anyway and that others would know what was happening if they had watched their official video. They did flag up that they are composing an English language version of "Disko", so that fans could sing along and cover it. As for the rest of the M&G, the only point that wasn't common knowledge already was that their favourite Slovenian Eurovision entry was Sestre's 2002 classic "Samo ljubezen". They also liked the 2019 entry "Sebi" and that wasn't just because two members of LPS are called Zala and Gasper! A nice interview and from the images issued by the EBU, I suspect a similar feel to the staging at the NF is on the cards in their second rehearsal...
It was interesting to hear Ronnie say that at normal festivals and gigs they have to work hard with the visuals to attract an audience but Eurovision gives them a head start with that. They did admit that the pyros were very hot and that one of the guitarists ended up with some of the fuel on them. Ronnie joked that they could have a BBQ at the end of the song! It was an interesting M&G in that several of the group were happy to contribute and their experience of music in general shone through. Stoyan is impressed how Eurovision has developed over his three times there, they don't consider themselves a Supergroup and they are pleased that their fans will watch them who would never normally watch the Contest. This is one show that I am looking forward to when we get to see this for the first time...
MOLDOVA (Zdob şi Zdub & Fraţii Advahov - "Trenuleţul")
- she has a personal astrologer who predicted in 2021 that Monika would be involved in a major international contest in May 2022;
- she had a major sentimental moment before going on stage today, thinking back to being a young girl and dreaming of that moment;
- her haircut is purely time saving and she is bored with it, adding that it makes her look like a microphone!
She is one of the experienced performers at Eurovision and this comes across every time I see her perform or talk - here's looking forward to rehearsal 2...
SWITZERLAND (Marius Bear - "Boys Do Cry")
Sometimes Meet & Greets / Press Conference get lots of variety in their questions, sometimes one thing is the focus. And so it proved here with Marius - a lot of questions were about the lyrical content and whether it is okay for men to show their emotions. I didn't have a problem with that but I did get the feeling that Marius wanted to chat about more! The two new points that I found out about him was that he chose Bear as a stage name as a friend of his kept describing him as one, plus "Sound Of Beauty" is like a trigger for him when he hears a particular song (he mentioned one by Sam Smith) and he gets a pleasant sensation from that. We didn't learn much about his staging from his chat or even the pictures produced - all will become clear soon...
SLOVENIA (LPS - "Disko")
SLOVENIA (LPS - "Disko")
To be fair, if Alyona Lanskaya can emerge from a disco ball in 2013 and do the Cha Cha then there is no reason why Slovenia can't have one behind them during a song called 'Disko'! Not sure if it does anything more than sit there, but it does add something to the entry that it didn't have in EMA. Their Meet & Greet was another where I got a question answered...
"The Eurovision fandom loves artists like yourselves who sing in their own language, even though it might make it difficult for some to understand what is going on. Do you think that 'Disko' will cut across any language barriers?"

UKRAINE (KALUSH Orchestra - "Stefania")
I wouldn't normally pick a behind-the-scenes picture but it sums up Ukraine's Meet & Greet very well - the lady in the mask is the Ukrainian Head of Press Oksana Skybinska and also the translator for the whole band. It meant that the Meet & Greet was all directed through her - Oleh, the lead singer with the pink bucket hat, answered all the questions with Oksana providing the 'straight down the line' English answers. No problem with that at all in this situation but in case any reader gets to do interviews themselves, it does make for a very stilted interview. There really was nothing that came out of the chat that we don't already know, bar that the lyric "I will come to you by the broken road" is now the most relevant one in the song, considering the current world situation, and Oleh would love to collaborate with Eminem one day, as he is a massive icon of his who shows that any obstacle can be overcome. The staging appears to be more like the promo parties than at Vidbir, where there was a box to move onto - we will see if there is anything to be added next time around...
BULGARIA (Intelligent Music Project - "Intention")
You wouldn't believe that they were a rock band, would you? Joking aside, I think that this is where we will see that Bulgaria are a far stronger proposition live than most of the fandom believe. Just be looking at the images by the EBU and the show they put on in Amsterdam, this will be a very solid rock performance AND THERE IS AN AUDIENCE FOR THAT! Remember the Juries of music professionals? Remember the 'once a year' televoters who don't live and breathe Eurovision? IMP were also kind enough to answer my question to them:
"Looking at the EBU rehearsal pictures from earlier on with the stunning mix of fire and water, it looks like we are going to get a great show from you guys. How does the Eurovision stage compare with others you've played on around the world?"

NETHERLANDS (S10 - "De diepte")
This picture epitomises everything that I haven't seen S10 show me to date - real passion in her delivery in a visible way. When I have seen her perform her back catalogue of EDM tracks, she is totally on it - I know that this is a very deep and meaningful track, but sometimes the despair just doesn't come through. This picture is the one that might change my mind. As for the Meet & Greet, I almost missed it as it started with little notification! I watched the total live and also On Demand (an excellent service provided by the Online team) and not only was she dressed in an orange tie die jumper, she was very happy and smiley. She told us all that she was ecstatic about the outfit and that choosing it was almost like choosing a wedding dress in that so many were on offer, plus she felt that the rehearsals had gone amazingly well. The other images hint at smoke and beams of light around her, the darkness of her outfit and the staging suiting the subject matter of the song perfectly. She said that serious matters can fit into Eurovision and that even the more negative parts of life can provide a beautiful song. Perhaps once I have seen the whole performance, S10 can change my mind about this entry but I was enchanted by her personality and forthright nature during the chat...
And so onto the last Meet & Greet of the day with the guys who I chatted with in Amsterdam and we have yet another barrel of fun coming our way. It looks like the performances we got at the promo parties will be duplicated in Turin but with BRIGHT BLOCK COLOURS! And it was about that part of their staging that I lead with my question and they were kind enough to answer:
"I've just seen the pictures of your outfits on stage today and I'm loving the bold colours and shapes on the outfits! Your song is so catchy already, did you really think that anybody was going to forget your entry?"
Problem was that I forgot that their English is not the best and even with an interpreter it took a while for the band to understand what I meant! They replied that many colours with their music brings positive energy for the viewers and they want everyone watching to enjoy their show and have fun. To be honest, I wouldn't have expected anything else! They feel that coming back to Eurovision is a carnival and they want to be remembered for having the most cheerful song - they also admitted that they weren't intending to return but their fans in Moldova loved the song so much, they pushed for them to enter it this year. I haven't seen the full performance but based on Amsterdam and just looking at those outfits, they are going to qualify, aren't they?
And that was, as they say, it for Day ONE at the Online Press Centre. Have a look on the Eurovision TikTok channel for tiny glimpses of the act's performances, but be quick as they will be gone in 24 hours! I am 30 years too old to be desiring quick disposable videos to watch but it is a way of targeting the teens and 20s - if it doesn't work then back to normal next year. Day 2 is going to be much the same as today - no sight of the first rehearsals but more Meet & Greets that I intend to post here in the blog tomorrow. There are a few chats I am looking forward to but one in particular - we didn't hear from her at all during the promo parties and the rumours of what her performance will look like are extremely positive. Plus she is my #8 this year...
Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord is who I want to find out more about!
