Day 9 was the traditional start of Eurovision week...
What a way to get going!
The middle Sunday of Eurovision fortnight is always the Opening Ceremony and the <colour> Carpet event - Moroccanoil are still the major sponsor of Eurovision so Turquoise it is yet again that our artists stride down in their finery (all pictures by Andres Putting for the EBU). And what a way to start - Emma Muscat of Malta shows that she can carry a 'Greek Goddess' look off pretty well, thank you very much! She was fortunate enough to be out first when it was sunny and make it into the Reggia di Venaria where the evening party was taking place before we had what is becoming the normal dose of heavy rain. The venue itself was magnificent but to be honest, it was all about the outfits today. I have flagged up the ones that caught this radio show host & blogger's eye but I am no fashion expert! Those who know me well would have guaranteed that I would highlight Emma but not all of my choices are of beautiful singers wearing not a lot! SEVENTEEN artists make the cut in this article - the rest weren't horrible or bad, they were either what they will be wearing on stage or just run-of-the-mill suits and smart casual outfits. The other factors that came into play were when we had artists who I thought would come on the Turquoise Carpet (TC) with something outlandish but instead had chic and style in abundance. Much like Montenegro's Vladana...
Having her own fashion magazine online for ten years, and seeing what outfits she has worn for PR, suggested that we were going to get something very outlandish from Vladana but what we got was classic, stylish and fitting with the surroundings. That was what she was going for and said so herself in the interview she has with the hosts - everything about the look was clean and pure, and one of the highlights in an understated way on the TC.
Another artist whose stage look is always OTT and linked to major fashion labels is Achille Lauro and yet away from that, he has the look of a walkway model for wedding attire! I suspect that the suit is very designer label, with the tight waistcoat and buttonhole really showing off this man's mainstream style. Even when wearing 'normal' attire, this guy is super stylish and yet another surprise in a very understated way.
Sometime wearing what you feel comfortable in and what might be what you'd wear to have a wander around the touristy parts of town is the way to go and that is what LUM!X and Pia went for. I felt that their youth helped make this look totally natural for this event and to be honest it fitted the vibe of them and their Eurovision entry. No need to wear a huge dress and suit if you don't feel comfortable.
Sometime just dressing your age is the way to go and having Brooke in a summery dress with fringing and her dancers in matching skin tight trousers and frilly boob tubes was definitely a great look. Her fun and outgoing persona fits perfectly with this and she seemed very comfortable all the way along the TC, which is the main battle won with this sort of event.
Whoever has styled We Are Domi for their Eurovision performance and also for the TC is inspired and has given them some of the best looks for each. Both guys have the classic polo neck with suit over the top (Ben with blue, Casper with floral patterned reddish brown) and Dominika stands out wonderfully with her white and blue patterned suit plus spaghetti strapped top plus those cool red sunglasses. She admitted that she was using those more for effect than eye protection but hey, she looked amazing on the TC - all three together having one of the best looks there.
This shows you that despite being a family, you can still all have your own look. That is something that Systur advocate on stage, with each sister dressing differently and that was continued onto the TC, and much in the same style. The stand out for me on stage and here is Beta, who continued her roll neck/mini skirt/boots look from stage to the Ceremony itself. The orange hues had a 70s retro feel and the Ukraine flag being incorporated into the outfit in a subtle way shows support without being too overwhelming. The trans colours also are testament to their core values too - a casual and yet stylish look from all the band, including Eythor who went classic white suit.
From all black at DORA and pre-Eurovision to this bright pink colour for her stage outfit and the TC, Mia looked stunning with the combination skirt and jacket plus accompanying boots. She was someone that was picked up easily by the production camera team at the event - the pink shone like a beacon whenever we had a long shot of the delegations on the TC! Wonderful styling for an artist and a great idea to keep all the colours the same throughout the Eurovision process.![]()

Some artists keep the theme of their performance throughout the Eurovision fortnight and respect due to Konstraktaand her Ancient Roman helpers for their stylish look, she all in a white trouser suit and hat, then in the black jackets and dresses. And of course the obligatory bowls! One of the most elegant looks on the TC, Serbia have a representative that takes her method acting the whole nine yards.
As much as Vladana and Achille NOT being extravagant was a big surprise for me, S10 wearing this dress was the same response but in the opposite direction. I had got so used to seeing her in dark or understated outfits that this was totally out of left field - apparently there is a theme to it in that it mimics the feelings those who suffer from fear response have, where they want to hide in their clothing, which explains the big shoulders on the dress. The design is pretty with the flowers on the pink and it definitely was one of the 'wow' moments of the TC. Back to her black suit on stage but a day of having all eyes on S10 for sure.
Classically beautiful on stage as a Mediterranean goddess and the same on the TC,Andromache showed off her beauty with a classic dress in pink with room for her legs to be shown off to the crowds watching as she proceeded along the Carpet. Very simple in style and yet very effective, one of the most elegant looks this year.
Remember that I said that the long range cameras picked up on Mia's pick outfit very easily? Amanda was the other that was in that situation, with this very simple and yet classically gorgeous pink dress. Main issue was that it was raining as she started her run and that meant she had to hold the bottom of the dress up in the air to avoid soaking up the water, until the heavens cleared later on. Another where the look wasn't one you'd expect for someone who comes across as very reserved and guarded.
Before the TC, there were polls about who would have the most outlandish outfit and Ronela was there as an option - she did not disappoint with this creation of colour style, shoulder pads and a box hat (literally). We didn't get a huge amount of information about who made any of the outfits on display and that was a shame for this one, as whoever did deserves a huge round of applause for making something seemingly OTT and yet totally befitting with the artist's personality and passions. Definitely the outfit everyone would remember.
Ah, Circus Mircus! Perhaps some were expecting something more to do with the circus but their stage outfits suggest more Steampunk than Barnum & Bailey, and these suggest more military paraphernalia. Very smart and stylish, another distinctive look that has obviously been well thought out and crafted by the band and Georgian delegation - this also looked the part when they walked into the UNESCO site for the party.
WOW! Another artist who had a look at Melodifestivalen that suggested night club beauty but at no point did I expect that Cornelia would turn up to the TC in anything like this. The old adage goes "If you've got it, flaunt it" and to be fair, that is exactly what Cornelia is doing, as she is stunning and a real pleasure to look at. I suspect that the mesh oversuit, the black ruff and her underwear weren't the warmest for the weather but that was never going to be the point - a real change for Sweden, when most of their artists turn up in clothes that they'd wear on a day out or in traditional office wear. This outfit is definitely something I'll remember from this year's TC.
Not really a stand-out but as I am from the UK, it would be churlish to ignore Sam and his silver jumpsuit. I assume that this was linked to 'SPACE MAN' as a theme, although you could never be sure with Sam - this could be something he'd wear out and about anyway! It showed off some of his chest tattoo and the main USP is him and his personality, so it didn't really make any difference what he was wearing, to be honest.
Now this guy is living his best life - Malik looked super smart in his burgundy red suit and black collarless shirt, with a statement of style that sometimes less is more. He looked different to a lot of the male artists in that he had some colour to play with (there was a lot of black) and he was happy in his own skin. Arguably the most relaxed artist that we have her in Turin, I love his attitude and now his style too.
So those were the stand outs for me on the TC - do you want to watch the full four hours (or FFWD through to the best bits)? Here you go:
The last picture is of the hardest working people throughout the broadcast, our hosts - three of which we had seen during the Meet & Greets and Press Conferences, plus one addition:
Mario, Laura, Gabriele and Carolina - all very entertaining, they kept it all moving, kept proceedings light and got through it all with minimal hitches. I appreciated their style of presenting which suited a four hour live outside broadcast perfectly and Mario/Laura/Carolina have been superb in the Press Centre. This Carpet event was actually one of the better ones that I have watched since I started doing so in 2014 - compared to Vienna where the hosts were off screen and clearly had no clue as to what was going on, Turin was an absolute dream!
