Two thirds of Il Volo on stage is still a lot better than none..
Arguably the highlight of SF2 apart from the competitors!

Il Volo were the star turn of SF2
Måneskin and Gigliola Cinquetti for the Final.  And we have just had the first half of the final chapter of the Eurovision 2022 season - the JURY FINAL.  Again I was fortunate enough to use my press accreditation to see all 25 Finalists perform this evening via the Online Press livestream and as for every day so far, I will give you an insight into how every artist did and where I would rank them.  We are getting to the sharp end now, where the favourites need to keep up their excellence to ensure they get good points and the rest look to be as high up the table as possible.  Only two didn't do themselves justice tonight - keep reading and you will find out who they were.  Here is a reminder of the running order for both the Jury and Public Final:
So we kick off with perhaps the only song we could do in the first half - the one 'banger' left from Czech Republic...

Czech Republic  (We Are Domi – "Lights Off")
This is an incredible way to start the show and We Are Domi, with Dominika in particular, getting this performance off pat now.  She has no issues with the vocals at all, they all look great, Dominika is up there with Lauri from The Rasmus for performance energy and connection, plus it is obvious that the band has surpassed their wildest dreams as far as final placings are concerned.  8.00/10 tonight but that only left this entry 17th on my list, so good was the majority of acts in the Jury Final...

Romania (WRS – "Llámame")
My shock qualifier from SF2 is still a surprise mainly because of those nasally vocals that WRS has.  The stage choreography however is exceptional and visually this is one of the best entries this year.  The crowd loved singing along with the chorus but then again there are huge numbers of Spaniards there!  There is a slight change in that the male dancers finish at the front of WRS, with the female ones by his side.  Not that it really made much difference to me - 7.50/10 and 21st on my Jury list...

Portugal (MARO – "Saudade, Saudade")
Still a delight to hear these harmonies between all six singers plus experience the heartfelt solos by MARO herself.  The compact nature of the B stage gives this such an intensity that I am sure will pass onto some of the jurors watching.  I love watching them sing together and it brings a certain amount of pleasure whilst doing so - 8.50/10 should be getting points but there are so many great entries this year, so this is my #14...

Finland (The Rasmus – "Jezebel")
It looks as though Lauri has finally hit his vocal stride, as this Jury Final run was by far his strongest of any performance here in Turin.  We got the whole performance this time, with the small balloon sailing into the sky, the 'Jezebel' backing shout working perfectly and just so much energy coming from all members of the band.  Being the one and only rock band in the Final gives them a niche and probably a lot of televotes too - for me tonight, it was another 8.50/10 and #13 on my list...

Switzerland (Marius Bear – "Boys Do Cry")
Still endearing, still that lovely calm delivery in that beautiful crooner's voice and still the huge arm gestures!  I got the feeling that Marius knows that there won't be much for him in the Final, so he changed the vocal style up in the last 30 seconds of his entry, plus he did seem to have a small emotional crack in his voice at the end - still gave him 7.50/10 but that left him as #22 on my list...

France (Alvan & Ahez – "Fulenn")
The first of the Big 5 on offer for us and we still got the dynamic staging, the choppy camerawork, the intense looks and vocals plus that dancer who still barely features!  Bags of energy with this entry and so original - I felt that the opening vocal for Ahez was not as strong as I had heard it before but the rest of it was superb and the harmonies were great.  8.75/10 from me and my #11, which would (spoiler alert) turn into #10 and 1 point eventually if I had been doing this jury ranking for real as a UK juror...

Norway (Subwoolfer – "Give That Wolf A Banana")
Still visually stimulating, still a superb dance routine to watch and also a televote entry, not a jury one in my opinion.  As I have said before, this takes us back to the days of 100% televoting where novelty entries reigned - that is what this is and I am certain that jurors will not appreciate the bizarre lyrics, the musical and vocal distortions, plus the fact that you don't know if they are singing live.  I was generous and gave them 7.75/10 which placed Norway #18 - their televote will be much stronger for sure...

Armenia (Rosa Linn – "Snap")
And so we got to one of my continuing favourites from the start of this process.  This is still a modern radio friendly song, it has that wonderful lilting quality about it and the staging is still the most creative that we have in Turin.  All the hidden bit on the walls give a sense of excitement as they are found and the big reveal of the big hole to the audience is still that wow moment.  If I was being picky, I would say that Rosa's vocals weren't quite as loud as before but they were still clear and told that great story.  8.50/10 and just missing out on points as my #12...

Italy (Mahmood & Blanco – "Brividi")
We have known that hosts Italy have a reasonable first half draw, picked totally at random from all 25, and how that is now feeling like a producer-led selection of one of the favourites!  You could tell it was the home town song, as every Italian in the venue seemed to be singing it and I suspect that all the crew were at least humming it, it sounded so loud in the first part with Mahmood just singing.  Everything about this emphasised why "Brividi" won Sanremo - the sublime vocals, the story telling and interaction between Mahmood and BLANCO, the youthful side of BLANCO singing on the piano, the believable chemistry between the two of them with this song about love across boundaries and the perfect balance of dark and light throughout.  This is still the entry that caught my heart back in February and it is back to its best.  Real chills everywhere and I can see this being a Jury winner at least10.0/10 (the only one so far this year) and my #1...

Spain (Chanel – "SloMo")
The middle of the running order has given us a true excitement peak - whereas Italy gives us the love and emotion, Spaingives us the action and excitement!  According to friends there last night, there were huge numbers of Spanish fans in the venue and they blew the roof off during Chanel's "SloMo" - I didn't need to be there as that was obvious on the livestream too!  After seeing a few runs now of the 'more traditional' version with the flamenco start, the fan, the high note and the added dance moves, this has not been sullied - this is now a visual and audible masterpiece!  If the crowd boost this tonight as they did in the Jury show, this will not be forgotten and the televote will be huge.  Chanel looks amazing and exudes her flirty nature and sexuality throughout the piece - combine that with the slickest ever dance routine known to humanity and this is one of the highlights of Eurovision 20229.50/10 on the night and #4 from me...

Netherlands (S10 – "De Diepte")
And the peak of mid run Eurovision 2022 does not let up, at least not as far as jurors are concerned - I am sure that everyone in the venue needs a calm down after Spain got their heart pounding!  Having said that, this is not calming in a lullaby way, this is stimulating a different set of emotions, those that make you want to listen to S10's story and believe it, to suddenly realise that this is someone who needs a listener, who needs to help with her situation.  The mood is perfect with mix of black and white on stage, with black clothing plus S10's blonde hair and bare stomach as a human contrast.  Even the look of the uneven clothing adds to the fact that this is such a big deal for her, to be singing in this way on the biggest stage in the world.  Still perfect vocals, still the vocal connection and now the added look on her face that suggests she will start to break down at any moment - another perfect performance, 9.25/10 and my #7...

Ukraine (Kalush Orchestra – "Stefania")
Now this being placed at 12 in the order suggests that the producers know something we don't - as late as a first half draw can be staged, as close to the big hitters in the second half as possible.  KALUSH ORCHESTRA are still the runaway favourites as we enter Final day and yet I saw yesterday that at least four other entries do have the edge now on them vocally and/or visually.  Don't get me wrong, this is still superb - the acapella at the start, the mix of traditional and modern, the earworm of a song, solid staging for a rap crew - but I fell that we could have a 2017 scenario again, where the favourite for months (Italy) fell at the last, the Final coming perhaps a week too late.  The situation is totally different in 2022 but I wonder if the impact that this had before the addition of the Big 5 (in particular Italy, Spain and the UK) has faded.  It has for me on a Jury ranking basis - still 9.00/10 but now my #10...

Germany (Malik Harris – "Rockstars")
Ah, Malik - the everyman who is enjoying all of his time here and gives it his all every single show.  This is not standing out at all and comes after the huge four performances before it, which makes it even less so but "Rockstars"does stick in your head and there is a real likeability about him and the whole staging.  If authenticity and 'looking most like a gig' were the basis for points, Germany would be top 5 - you believe that this is one of his shows or even his studio.  He will not shame his nation at all tonight but I did have him as my #20 with 7.50/10, so I don't think we will see a lot of him during voting time...

Lithuania  (Monika Liu – "Sentimentai")
We had the novelty of seeing Monika's real hair style during the Press Dress rehearsal earlier in the day (shorter in length, she has a forehead and she looks younger) and she was still subtly seducing the crowd with her performance as she does every time she sings "Sentamentai".  For one artist on stage, she does her best to fill the hall with her beautiful voice and her swaying body, and the close ups do keep this compact.  I am sure she will have got some Jury love, especially for Lithuanian returning to the Eurovision stage, but might have lost a few with her shouts to the crowd.  8.25/10 and #15 for me...

Azerbaijan  (Nadir Rustamli – "Fade To Black")
Whereas songs 9-12 were an overwhelming tidal wave of excitement and pleasure, songs 13-16 dipped to arguably the low point of the show, with slowness and precision being the watchword.  Earlier I said that two entries didn't quite hit the spot during their Jury Final run and one of those was Nadir.  There was nothing bad about this, although his vocals were probably the worst I have heard them all fortnight, with lots of warbling in his voice that muffled some of the English sung (not his first language).  There was still the passion in his vocal delivery and the acting on the bleachers with his dancer looked pleasant enough, but none of it really matched the story within the song still.  Confusion with it all is still the theme here for me - perhaps cutting his hair hasn't helped!  6.50/10 and #24 for me...

Belgium  (Jérémie Makiese – "Miss You")
Occasionally there will be an artist who has an off day, with the worst time to have that being the Jury Final where everything is being precisely ranked by music professionals.  Unfortunately in 2022, that is Jérémie - his vocals were noticeably thin at times, especially with the high notes, and he did look tired too.  Given that there really isn't much else about his performance bar the song itself and how he sings it, I think that Belgium might be in this year's bottom five unless he turns it around tonight.  The dancers looked even more invisible bar the guy who helps Jérémie with the 'Michael Jackson lean' - overall the weakest performance of the night and 6.25/10 plus #25 from me...

Greece  (Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord – "Die Together")
After the last four entries likely to have made up numerous trips to the toilet/bar/snack area, Eurovision 2022 needs another huge boost and Amanda gives it to us with her spellbinding show.  Respect due to the Jury Final crowd, they kept absolutely silent for the whole of her acapella in the first minute of this song and that added to the gripping emotion of this piece.  All the silences that she allows to happen gripped me tight and this is pure emotional control at its finest.  The visual effects were more obvious now - the chairs, the oozing liquid from them, the spotlight from her to the LED couple - and all made this a superbly well rounded story.  Her vocals are of course still perfect and she completes this with her story telling through her whole core.  A likely Jury winner of SF1, she is now in with a very competitive group from SF2 and the Big 5 - still 9.00/10 but now down to my #8...

Iceland  (Systur – "Með Hækkandi Sól")
As far as progression is concerned, Iceland have been the ones who have quietly and professionally moved up the pack to now be a prominent player of 2022, at least as far as the Jury vote is concerned.  Nothing changes for show to show (although all sisters and their brother jokingly were wearing sunglasses during the Press run) to be honest but that is the mastery of this entry.  They still have the same incredible harmonies with each sister singing at a slightly different pitch and tone; the camera angles are so simple and yet pick up the slightest look from them all; the split screen captures the beautiful ethereal nature of their voices and perfect interaction between them; and the Icelandic country vibe is so gentle and yet powers its way into your ears!  Systur look so comfortable on stage and so delighted to be in the Final - looks like Iceland chose well, 9.00/10 from me and my #9...

Moldova  (Zdob şi Zdub & Advahov Brothers – "Trenulețul")
Now we have got to the sharp end, Moldova's entry is never going to be competing for jury points when we have so many more songs that will appeal to music professionals this year.  ZDZ and their two friends have their time to come in the Public Final, where their insanely catchy polka and earworm stock phrases will bring them televotes by the trainload!  Everything appeals to the public - the bright colours, the song, the pace of music mimicking a train, the guitar solo and the fun an enjoyment of it all.  I am not saying it won't appeal to musos but if you are looking for precise vocals or originality and outstanding composition, you will find at least ten better examples elsewhere and that means no jury points.  7.25/10 and my #23 but their time to shine is to come...

Sweden  (Cornelia Jakobs – "Hold Me Closer")
Sweden marks the start of the second half batch of potential 2022 winners and this is the perfect gear change from the catchy polka of MoldovaCue the best lyrical content of 2022 and a return to the perfection of the winning performance of Melodifestivalen.  It was if all of the technical rehearsal nightmares Cornelia had over the fortnight were just a distant memory - this was performance purity.  She comes across as someone who you could never imagine having to plead with someone to stay with her for one more night before the other person splits up from her.  She also plays the role of somebody who is just realising that this is all happening during the three minutes of the song wonderfully well too - her vocal style is not perfect but her gravelly tones suit this emotional heartbreak.  The story told is perfect and as Eurovision entries go, you actually listen to the story and it makes sense from beginning to end.  Her role of dejected and soon to be spurned lover is also told beautifully with her looks down the camera, constant and believable, which adds to the emotionally wrought theme.  Put this all together with a very modern pop sound and we could see Sweden get their seventh win - 9.75/10 for me and my #2...

Australia  (Sheldon Riley – "Not The Same")
Given that Sheldon had to cope with the mic stand incident in SF2, I suspect that he was thinking about that as he walked up those stairs in the Jury Final, but everything ran perfectly this time.  The outfit and mask are still opulent and beautiful, the lighting is perfect, the story totally meaningful and related well and the unveil of his face at the end true cinema.  Put that voice and his natural gravitas with that and this is one of the must-see performances in Turin - the intense emotion leads on from Sweden and doesn't let up with Sheldon!  I had goosebumps throughout and this will go huge with juries around Eurovision - my #5 and 9.25/10...

United Kingdom  (Sam Ryder – "SPACE MAN")
Oh yes, the UK.  My nation and I have a feeling that I haven't experienced since 2014 - EXPECTATION!  Most of you will have only seen snippets of this live (it is available on YouTube as recorded) and can I just say that this is one of the best live shows that any UK artist has put on in living memory?  The performance starts with Sam singing in darkness standing on a lit stage which is the only source of light, a great way to start with the darkness of space theme.  Everything lights up up to show Sam with his planetary-adorned jumpsuit and he starts singing - and the magic starts.  The cages around him look amazing from afar and thankfully that doesn't happen too often, as Sam is the STAR here.  His vocals are superb and he has made a conscious decision not to go full blast - it sounded to me, having heard him sing so often, that he was holding himself back a touch, perhaps not to risk a duff note.  His other USP is his charisma and connection with the camera which was perfect during this run.  Even the cage drop worked well as we didn't really take in the stage hands lowering them this time and the colour change is divine.  Now I've never got the guitar solo piece but it does set up his final quieter closing piece really well, so even I have to admit that there is a place for Sam's guitar!  The whole is amazing and should appeal to jurors and public alike - I can't see anything wrong with his voice, his stage craft, the overall concept and what are clever lyrics with the song itself.  Of course there will be some bias in my ranking but it isn't often that I can place the UK as my #3 with a score of 9.75/10.  Here's hoping for a performance of the same standard tonight...

Poland  (Ochman – "River")
Now those who have been reading my daily reviews will know that I have a soft spot for this entry and that hasn't changed.  The watchword for Ochman and Poland is consistency - his voice is still the best at Eurovision 2022, his delivery of "River" vocally is still sublime and his emotional tone throughout is perfect.  The lyrics tell a story that is matched by the water effects on the scree, the lightning strike and shakes part way through and the writhing figures that swirl on the stage and then buffet him towards the end.  This is bordering between being just being perfect visually and just too much, and that might be the reason why this doesn't win Eurovision.  All the boxes will be ticked for music professionals and I can see a lot of 8/10/12 marks coming Poland's way - not so sure about the public though.  This perfectly poised fusion of classical and pop is a delight and will stick with me after Turin is long gone - my #6 on the night and 9.25/10...

Serbia  (Konstrakta – "In Corpore Sano")
Proving that performance art still has a place at Eurovision, Konstrakta got the crowd clapping and twisting their hands along with her last night.  Of course, we all know what this is about - I am still not sure how first timers will react to her hand washing, her helpers towel spinning and the subtitles which often do not make things that much clearer.  Sticking to the Jury side of things, there is no argument that this is original and the staging a delight and very visually intriguing.  Konstrakta acts this perfectly and has a very calm and yet demanding personality in front of the camera.  I am sure that this will get love from the Balkan nations who will readily understand what she is singing and therefore get a whole picture of what is going on - I am not sure that this will make it into many top tens away from that part of the world. From this being my #40 pre-Eurovision, this is now my #16 and 8.25/10 - you won me round, Konstrakta...

Estonia  (Stefan – "Hope")
And so to the producer's dream song title to end Eurovision 2022, "Hope".  The western movie vibe to this song is the hook for Estonia's chances of a decent Final placing and those bits of the performance, the serious bits, are really engaging and interesting.  There are the other parts that I feel will have left jurors a bit cold however - STEFAN's playing to the crowd, how he strays into vocals that are a bit mumbly, and how he drifts away from connecting with the camera.  All of those bits of the performance to be fair will connect with the public but I felt he might have lost marks with the juries.  The visuals are great with his jacket and the lights behind him adding to the excellent tv sepia filter and that jump is a fun thing to watch.  To be honest, I got the feeling that being in the Final was THE thing to achieve this year, so perhaps STEFAN is now just having fun - 7.50/10 and #19...

So there you go, all my thoughts on the Jury Final performances.  Where did that place them all in my rankings?
As you will have seen, all my top ten got scores of9.00 or above, so we are talking about the tiniest of margins between each of them.  If I had been an actual UK juror then obviously I could not vote for my #3, so move all of those ranked 4-10 up one and give France a point!  Of those out of the top ten, I can safely predict that Norway and Moldova in particular will do far, far better with the public than I have them down with me (and I suspect the actual jurors), but I don't see them as Eurovision 2022 winners.  There are two scenarios being proposed at the moment for who might win Eurovision this year...
  • Ukraine have it in the bag and everyone else are competing for second; or
  • This will be one of the closest Eurovision Song Contests ever with possibly 4-6 nations fighting it out.
Let's believe that we still have a chance that the second one is still in play - who do I think could win in Turin?
By midnight tonight, we will know for certain...
Good luck to all Finalists
but how about a UK win?
Come on Sam!
