Bright and loud with lots of heart(s)...
That's the Liverpool artwork...
Is it going to be how Eurovision 2023 is too?
Tuesday 31st January was a massive day for Liverpool and Eurovision, in that it was not only the day of the next big event, the Handover/Allocation Draw, but also the reveal of the artwork and slogan for Eurovision 2023. Yes, The Guide Liverpool told the world about these things the day before, as they watched the workmen putting banners up for the following day, but all the official pulsing gifs and super-stunning art came out to mostly positivity. Once we knew that it was hearts in the logo and that the font was clearly chosen as PENNY LANE, we now know what will be emblazoned on our merchandise this season. A closer look at the slogan? Go on then...
Now that will have to be thought about, as not only Rylan on the SF show but also myself on my show said "United in Music", so some care is needed for this to become interchangeable! The other point with the colours and shapes used in the artwork is that it can visually break-up words and pictures, leading to everyone having to take a second glance - as for instance, the 'LIVERPOOL' lettering:
There is a reason why psychedelic patterns are not commonplace on a practical level! For an event like Eurovision, the artistry adds to something that we haven't seen at the Contest as far as I can remember, so I am more than happy with it. Roll on the merch appearing - it looked great on Rylan and AJ:

You have now heard what I thought - here are those placings in full. First the Direct Finalists:
Remember that SF1 is on Tuesday 9th May and SF2 on Thursday 11th May - for the Direct Finalists, the big day is 13th May as far as the live show is concerned, although we will still have a Jury show that matters on Friday 12th. The placings are more for voting plus a chance to show off the entry with the rehearsal footage. The big deal was the draw for each SF:
Main 'winners' in each SF?
Main 'winners' in each SF?
SF1 - Serbia/Croatia, Norway/Sweden/Finland
SF2 - Cyprus/Greece, Estonia/Lithuania, Georgia/Armenia
There seemed to be no real connection between the Direct Finalists in each SF and any other nation, bar perhaps Ukraine with Georgia/Armenia. Other sites will dissect and discuss possible pros and cons for each nation in that draw - for me, as I said on the show:
If an entry is good enough, it won't need geography to get it through to the Final!
The whole Handover/Allocation Draw show was excellent in my opinion - Rylan and AJ Odudu were relaxed, entertaining, professional and interacted with the camera and the extras drawing the Direct nations with ease. It bodes well for Eurovision itself as far as BBC coverage is concerned, fingers crossed. We now have the rest of the National Final season to navigate and the gaps for the SFs can be filled over the coming six or so weeks. Two more artists were added to that list this week and you heard something from their back catalogue on the show. Let's start with Greece...
Victor Vernicos has been chosen as the Greek artist for Liverpool and will be singing "What They Say". That song has not been revealed as yet and so on the show I gave you a taster of what he sounds like with his latest release "Brutally Honest With You". What an incredible voice this 16 year old has! If his Eurovision entry is anything like the song you heard on the show then Greece might end up with a third consecutive top ten placing. He is already signed up with Panik Records, a sure-fire way to guarantee excellence as far as staging expertise and vocal coaching is concerned - as soon as "What They Say" is released, you will hear it on the show.
Another highlight of last Tuesday was that we found out the Austrian artists too - Teya and Salena will perform in Liverpool but that is all we know for now. Teya is an artist we have met before, in 2020 as Thea Devy in the Serbian National Final - her entry there, "Sudnji Dan", is what you heard on the show. Salena put forward entries for Austria in 2018 and 2019 without success, so she has been on the ORF radar for some time. We know when their entry will be released (8th March) but nothing else about it. Apparently this is the first time we have had a female duo representing Austria and that will definitely give some diversity in Liverpool.
As for the bulk of the show itself, it was all about the Czech and Irish lists. First up was Czech Republic, their National Final ESCZ being aired last Monday with the artists above. 30 minutes of show, very slick presenting and minimalistic staging were the order of the day - you got to hear the audio of each of the five artists on the show, here are the actual performances:
The reason for linking you to that again? You still have the chance to vote! I have already, based on my preferences on the night:
The most interesting entry by far was Vesna's "My Sister's Crown" - Rodan gave a very cute performance with a song that was extremely well written and fun, but I can't see past Vesna as the Czech winners. Having said that, whoever wins there will be played on LET ME BE THE ONE, hopefully next week, although that will depend on when the winner is announced on Tuesday!
The other line-up you heard on this week's show was the six from Ireland's Eurosong that took place on Friday 3rd February. I will not reveal the winner here or post my preferences from the night - that can be saved for next week's show! Let's just say that there really was only one act in to win it, with two others at least showing the best of themselves during their three minutes on The Late Late Show. It is going to be a very busy week with new Liverpool entries!
That was I.T. with "Žinau, tai tu" from Lithuania's Pabandom iš naujo 2023 Heat 2 - I loved this, vocally and performance wise. It bordered on pure artistry, with the dark shades and colour on her body, the gold leaf and what appeared to be something like an ultrasound scan on her abdomen, and yet this did not make the SF, finishing 11th. Perhaps it was too out there for Lithuania but it earnt I.T. the right to be played on my show and have her video here on the blog!
Dana International kicked off the show, partly because "Diva" was the last Eurovision winning song on UK soil, partly as it is one of Rylan's favourite ever entries and it is also the favourite entry of new LMBTO Facebook group memberDavid. Eugent Bushpepa's "Mall" was the favourite ever Eurovision entry of Philipe and kicked off hour 2. This week's edition was a really fun one to present and hopefully to listen to...
Today (Saturday 4th February) was the day that Subwoolfer ended their reign as Norwegian champions of MGP and it was also the day that we found out something about them that we suspected for a while. I'll tell you more on next week's show and you'll hear their latest track "Worst Kept Secret" as well. Along with that, you will hear the winning songs from Norway/Ireland/Spain, the song for Liverpool from Slovenia's Joker Out, material from the announced singers for Armenia and Georgia, together with this artist from 2006:
