At the risk of this becoming the 'Helena and Krista' blog, yet again Ms.Siegfrids was in the Eurovision news this week with the announcement that she will be the sole host of UMK 2017. The producers in Finland were obviously banking on a Hillary Clinton win in America - I'm not sure I would have wanted to see her dressed as Donald Trump! I wonder if she'll have the cockatoo on stage with her? I have to say that I prefer her with her normal length hair rather than this 'power bob' but each to his or her own - 28th January will be when Krista gets to 'strut her stuff' at the Metro Arena in Espoo, near Helsinki. UMK and Krista have produced yet another masterpiece in visual form here - I suspect this will yet again be one of the best promo vidz this year:
Her inspiring speech in English?
“People of Finland, it is time to face facts.
I will not promise you new roads or jobs. I will not promise you tax breaks or medical services. I can only promise you a UMK.
We need glitter, confetti, WTF moments, costume changes, and performers singing with modulation.
One Saturday night, I will have you permission to have a crazy party. Let’s make Finland fab again!”
With Krista hosting the show, I have no doubt that this year's UMK will deliver all that and more...
Who will be at Eesti Laul?
This lovely lady for a start - Elina Born is back after a year out and Stig's penned her song! She's one of four former Estonian Eurovision participants amongst the twenty chosen artists this year:
Almost Natural – "Electric"
Alvistar Funk Association – "Make Love, Not War"
Angeelia – "We Ride With Our Flow"
Antsud – "Vihm"
Ariadne – "Feel Me Now"
Carl-Philip – "Everything But You"
Close To Infinity feat. Ian Karell – "Sounds Like Home"
Daniel Levi – "All I Need"
Elina Born – "In Or Out"
Ivo Linna – "Suur loterii"
Janno Reim & Kosmos – "Valan pisaraid"
Karl-Kristjan & Whogaux feat. Maian – "Have You Now"
Kerli – "Spirit Animal"
Koit Toome & Laura – "Verona"
Laura Prits – "Hey Kiddo"
Leemet Onno – "Hurricane"
Lenna Kuurmaa – "Slingshot"
Liis Lemsalu – "Keep Running"
Rasmus Rändvee – "This Love"
Uku Suviste – "Supernatural"
There's also an Estonian there who sung for Switzerland in 2005 - recognise Lenna Kuurmaa as the lead singer of Vanilla Ninja? I certainly did!
Eleven years on and yet still strikingly attractive. We don't know what Lenna or Elina's entries sound like yet but we do have something to listen to for two of the others in the list:
I love the picture for this, probably a bit more so than the song itself. I'm not a huge fan of this sort of folk music which sounds to me as though it should be being played in front of a king by a troupe of travelling minstrels. Very different, I grant you, but I suspect that the staging for this one will be critical for Antsud to be appearing in the Final on March 4th next year. The only other entry to date is from Ivo Linna, who sung for Estonia in 1996 in Oslo:
It needs cutting by a mighty two minutes and fifteen seconds for Eurovision for a start! It's very easy listening (which in itself is not a bad thing) but I suspect that even three minutes of this will get overlooked in the search for Estonia's next Eurovision act. It'll be a very interesting Contest this year and I think we'll be getting an entry on a par with 2015 - hopefully I'll be watching the Final in the Saku Suurhall on March 4th 2017...
Jon Ola is slightly concerned...
Anyone else think that we were launching into a bit of Softengine at the start of this video? And was it a hint four seconds in that we saw a poster of the delightful Zlata Ognevich? Maybe NTU have mentioned to the EBU who might be hosting or maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part! I get the feeling that the EBU were spoilt by Sweden last year with how well it was organised and how quickly it was all sorted - have they forgotten Baku and not even having a venue in place until 2012 itself? I still have confidence in Ukraine getting it all done in time but it is interesting to see the 'main man' getting a little bit nervous. One aspect of the Contest that appears to have changed is the proposed site of the Opening Ceremony - remember how we thought it was going to be Saint Sophia's Cathedral? The latest news is that the authorities in Kyiv have now refused permission for that to happen due to grumblings from the city's religious communities. That is a real shame as the venue looked magnificent but the likely alternative is not bad either:
The Mariyinsky Palace might be the new backdrop but as it is the official ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine, it is likely that this might be in the background, rather than the place for the artists and crowds at next year's Contest to wander around. Then again, stranger things have happened...
Ukrainian Bots are not allowed to vote...
Do you remember how just less than a fortnight ago that I said that the race for the online slot in the Ukrainian NF was all but over? That two acts were miles ahead of the rest? According to the broadcaster in charge, STB, there may have been a reason for that - internet bots. I tried to find an interesting picture of a bot but I chose one of a replicator fro Stargate SG1 - looks far more cool. It was discovered that suspiciously large numbers of votes had been made by 'visitors' that had spent less than a second on the page whilst 'casting their votes', something a human being, even one into Eurovision, cannot physically do. The two main beneficiaries of this process were...yes, you guessed it, the runaway leaders Kuznetsov and Aghiazma. It is unclear if the bands themselves were involved or if it was misguided fans but their scores were reset to zero. For "Zombie Dogs", this move has all but crushed their support, their votes creeping up to 570 by today (16th November). It is a different and very interesting story for "Deep Shivers" however:
Their vote is nowhere near what it was but they have remarkably regained the lead from Denis Povaliy, who was the main 'winner' of this 'scandal'. It seems as though Kuznetsov really DID have that groundswell of support amongst online Ukrainians - will they reach the heady heights of 82000 votes again? Voting continues until 10th January, so they have plenty of time. Or can Denis gain your vote with his word 'written on your heart'?
Could Italy compete with a Sanremo Giovani act?
Now I'm not a massive Sanremo fan as I always take the view that watching a show for four days that only MIGHT have the Italian Eurovision act singing in it is potentially a waste of my time and effort. This year, however, I have decided to be a bit more open minded and at least have a listen to all the songs that will be there, so that I will at least have heard what could be their Eurovision entry. So many ifs and buts - at this stage, we have had the 'Giovanni' (new acts) artists revealed in audio form. The twelve entries from that list are:
Aprile & Mangiaracina – Il cielo di Napoli
Carola Campagna – Prima che arrivi il giorno
Chiara Grispo – Niente è impossibile
Francesco Guasti – Universo
La Rua – Tutta la vita questa vita
Lele – Ora Mai
Leo Stain – Ciò che resta
Maldestro – Canzone per Federica
Marianne Mirage – Le Canzoni Fanno Male
The Shalalalas – Difficile
Tommaso Pini – Cose che danno ansia
Valeria – La vita è un’illusione
Now there is a chance, admittedly a very small one, that Italy's entry could come from these musicians. The winner of Sanremo itself gets first refusal but, in a way a bit like a minor figure of a Royal Family becoming Monarch if twenty others turn down the role, someone from the newcomers could be on that stage in Kyiv. My favourites from these based on the song alone? A toss-up between two excellent vocals:
Lele - Ora Mai https://t.co/lQKUGKM8Am— LMBTO (@LMBTOEurovision) November 5, 2016
Tommaso Pini - Cose che danno ansia https://t.co/n6SrVLQslY— LMBTO (@LMBTOEurovision) November 5, 2016
Have a listen yourself and see what you think - maybe I've been missing something by not following Sanremo...
The Gang of Six complete their teams in Armenia...
I get the feeling that I'm one of the only people actively following this process - for some reason I am enjoying this immensely, despite not understanding anything that is being said and ignoring the fact that this is very 'talent show' inspired, the sort of television project I normally actively avoid! The Judge's Selection Stage finished last weekend and I cast my eye over those artists performing in Day 3 and 4:
So what did you think of these shows? There were some strange choices, in my opinion, by some of the judges but it did appear that each had their own preferences - looking at Hayko's list, he seemed to be voting with his heart (or some other part of his anatomy) than his head! As usual, I will put my thoughts out there...
Day 3:
- Lilit Harutyunyan - second on seems to be a popular slot for some of the better singers in this process and day 3 saw the amazingly distinctive gravelly tones of Lilit entertaining the audience and panellists. Not as good a performance for me at this stage compared to her audition piece, as she started to go a bit OTT with the old vocal gymnastics and this is a singer that definitely needs the right song for THAT voice. Having said all that she was still excellent to watch and listen to and I would have gone with her, as did Aram MP3;
- Hasmik Shiroyan - the star of the show for me and as I mentioned before during the audition shows, this lady was a favourite of mine from the first moment I saw her and heard her sing. She belted her song out, doing the good old fashioned thing of just standing there and singing! Beautiful voice, every note was spot on and she had a great connection with the camera - if I had been on the panel, I would have been fighting tooth and nail with Iveta to get this lady on MY team. I think that she is going to be there in the Final or whatever Depi Evratesil ends up doing to choose the winner.
Day 4:
- Gevorg Harutyunyan - this guy was never on my radar during the audition round but boy did he stand out here! "This Is A Man's World" is a huge song to cover, especially for a small guy, but his vocal style really suited this song and he utilised all of his vocal range, hitting some amazingly high notes. He also gave some decent stage moves before he swapped into another set of lyrics in Armenian. Inga got her man and I think that was the right choice;
- Karine Harutyunyan - another lady who stood out in the audition stage and she didn't disappoint me here. Karine sung a superb cover of Beyonce's "Listen" and barring a few strained high notes, this was a stunning vocal and I would have taken her like a shot. Inga picked up yet another talented singer and the artist herself got a deserved standing ovation;
- Narine Jinanyan - a great performance to wind up the JSS, Narine upped her game here compared to the Audition phase. A great performance, superb singing, lots of acting whilst delivering a believable story to the audience. Maybe because she was in her comfort zone was why she excelled and Inga picked up yet another superb singer.
On first count there were 23 acts through, not 24 - Essaï was the culprit here, having only claimed three acts for his team. He got to choose 'the best of the rest' - Marissa, from day 2, was given a reprieve. A fair choice, in my opinion, as she had a imposing stage presence and I felt the only reason she wasn't chosen was that her selection of song was so downbeat and moody.
Looking at the six judge's teams, I have to say that it is going to be an interesting contest as no one juror has a massively better set of singers than anyone else. There are some standouts still left in this Contest and if I had the opportunity to have picked my four favourites, my 'dream team', it would consist of these four artists:

Phenomenal voices and I would be happy (at this stage) for any of them to be singing in Kiev. I have absolutely no idea what happens next in Depi Evratesil - I'll be glued to my screen when the next YouTube video is posted to see what happens (I have still not managed to work out the Armenian tv feed!)...
Why is Zach Braff hosting the Ukraine National Selection Process?
There is a passing resemblance or is it just me? If you plan to follow the Ukrainian path to Kyiv in 2017, you'll see this guy a lot - Sergiy Prytula is his name. Apparently he's got ten years of hosting experience and he's very excited to join the team etc etc. It leaves the path open for a certain outstanding beauty to host the big event in May - how about it Ukraine? Zlata Ognevich? You've already got the posters printed...
Who is on the OGAE UK Selection Jury?
Supergrass sum up my situation nicely (and I don't mean the weird deep noise that vibrates through your body):
Yep, I've missed out yet again in the ballot to be one of this year's OGAE jurors to help select the UK's Eurovision entry. I suspect that my being a middle aged man in Bristol really cut down my chances of 'getting the gig' when OGAE UK are trying to balance the demographics across the board. Maybe if this same process is used for the next five years or so, I might eventually be picked! Good luck to those who have got the nod and here's hoping that you find an entry that does the UK proud - to be honest, the OGAE UK 'act' last year wasn't too bad at all:
If "Miracle" had possessed the 'killer climax' that was lacking from this entry, Karl could well have been vying with Joe & Jake for the win in Kentish Town. Great singer, just not the right song. The only plus point about NOT being on the panel? I can do all my Eurovision reviews free from the constraints of being involved in the process! The main downside of not being involved?
I can't do my own UK version of Ben Robertson's excellent articles
about being on the Melodifestivalen public jury!
