[LMBTO] The Eurovision fans speak - ESC Top 250 2018...

So what did you think?  Who was going to be top of the Eurovision tree THIS New Year's Eve?

Loreen yet again?

More of who was at the sharp end of the Eurovision Top 250 vote later in the article - a smattering of this year's top 5, the same old faces plus the odd surprise, all thanks to the organisational skills of ESC Radio and songfestival.be:
What were my votes this year, I hear you ask?  Did I choose yet another category, another theme, as I have done every year since I started voting in 2013?
Of course I did!

I did think about doing a 'Best Of' from those five lists but to be honest, I'm not yet there, not yet ready to do another list of my top ten entries ever.  What I did do was theme it around the biggest change in my Eurovision obsession that happened since the 2017 vote - no, not attending my first Eurovision Contest in Lisbon, although that is a biggie, but...

adding 'radio show presenter' to my Eurovision CV on August 7th 2018

I went with my favourite tracks that I have played on my radio show "Let Me Be The One", up to the end of November when I had to submit my vote.  I always accept that some of my choices will not make the Top 250 when I am this random (although I have had 9 out of 10 in the chart before) but I find it more enjoyable than choosing the same ten year after year after year...

2018 - "Let Me Be The One" favourite tracks so far

So here we go, a different top ten that encompasses Hebrew, Slovak, Italian, some Estonian and of course THE language of early Eurovision, French.  First up though, let's have some Bulgarian...

1 point - Poli Genova "Na Inat"

Having seen the lady herself perform this live a few months ago and also at Amsterdam Calling in April, I can honestly say that I prefer this to Poli's more successful entry from 2016.  Lots more emotion, more sing-a-long qualities and a rawer performance here in Düsseldorf that I appreciate much now than I possibly did then - the stagecraft and joy that Poli shows with all her performances was on that podium in abundance though!  I played "Na Inat" during the Eurobash show and commented that it is probably one of the only times that every Eurovision fan sings along in word-perfect Bulgarian!  I look forward to seeing Poli yet again in the future, along with Bulgaria who have taken a year off, and perhaps this entry might break into the ESC Top 250 again....

2 Points - Kristína "Horehronie"

One of those tracks that would be described as a 'cult classic' if it were a film, "Horehronie" has become a massive fan favourite over time and is now one of the most popular videos on Eurovision.tv.  How this only got to 16th in the 2010 SF is beyond me but even eight years ago was a different time, the voters not appreciating the native Slovak tongue, the cultural references to the Horehronie region of Slovakia or Kristína's beautiful ethereal voice and obvious visual attractiveness.  I could almost imagine this being part of a Disney fantasy soundtrack and I played it in show 5 when her nation announced that they wouldn't be in Tel Aviv this year.   It managed 104th on the 2018 list though...

3 Points - Anonymous "Salvem El Món"

Now I know that this didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of making the Top 250 but this Andorran classic is one of my staging favourites, even though Anonymous have really taken Busted to their hearts!  Another show 5"This nation won't be going to Israel" track, the mix of Catalan and English and that high energy pop-punk performance of "Salvem El Món" deserved just two places higher to get Andorra into the Eurovision Final but it wasn't to be, 12th was the best it got.  I enjoyed playing this on the show just before part of my Esther Hart interview!  No place on the list for this one but there was for these guys...

4 Points - Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro "Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente"

It took me the whole of the 2018 season to realise what a masterpiece that Italy's 2018 entry actually was - initially it looked to me like two angry men cramming as many words into 90 seconds as possible but eventually "Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente" itself crystallised for me and I played it on show 15 in November.  What we had was an extremely well crafted and intellectually challenging song that strongly hinted at six separate terrorist atrocities around the world, along with pointing out the futility of violence towards those who have done nothing to you.  Such a powerful anti-conflict song and an amazingly potent stage performance by Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro in Lisbon provided Italy with a well deserved 5th place and a very creditable 29 on the Top 250 list...

5 Points - Shiri Maimon "HaSheket SheNish'ar"

Now this was one of my very early picks for the radio show (episode 2, where I attempted to explain the 'close season'), when I knew that Shiri was going to the new judge on HakoKhav HaBa in Israel.  I was delighted that she was doing that, not only as she is eminently watchable but also that I love this power ballad that gave Israel their second best finish on the 21st century.  "HaSheket SheNish'ar" getting to number 50 on the Top 250 list was a delightful bonus too, as I wasn't expecting it to be rated so highly this year - perhaps all Israeli entries are getting a boost from the Contest being in Tel Aviv?  Long may it continue, I say!  Along with this next entry being adored so much each year too...

6 Points - Urban Symphony "Rändajad"

"Rändajad" is the 'Eurovision earworm antidote' - in a good way, of course.  Classically based music that stops the brain playing the same song over and over and over...well, you get the idea!  This 2009 entry is a timeless classic in its own right with Sandra Nurmsalu up front for Urban Symphony, providing those Estonian lyrics that transfix me everytime, as does her perfectly executed 'staring down the camera into your soul' look.  This, of course, appeared in my Earworm episode in mid October and deservedly rounded off the show - it also was well rewarded in this year's Top 250, coming 28th...

7 Points - Pasha Parfeny "Lăutar"

Another song from the Earworm show, "Lăutar" is my all-time 'stick in my head' track and the only song in English this year, although at times Pasha's vocals make that a little difficult to decipher!  This track makes me sing along everytime I play it, so much so that when I was pre-recording the episode, I actually was waiting for someone to speak after it finished before realising that it was me who was supposed to be talking.  Luckily those six seconds weren't on a live show and could be edited out!  Although not in Moldovan, this quirky number with two Eurovision artists on stage (Aliona Moon is backing Pasha up) deserved a place on my list but didn't get enough support from other fans to get on the Top 250...

8 Points - Birgit "Et uus saaks alguse"

"Estonia's Angel" gives me tingles down my spine every time I hear this song, Birgit providing such a captivating vocal display that transcends the need for much in the way of stagecraft, given that she had the beautiful white dress to minimise her pregnancy in Malmö and that dress alone limited her movement.  I played "Et uus saaks alguse" when ERR announced the definitive list of who would be at Eesti Laul 2019, this lady being part of The Swingers alongside Tanja from 2014.  It made it comfortably into my list this year and also onto the Top 250 at position 213...

10 Points - Gali Atari & Milk and Honey " Hallelujah"

All Israeli winning songs at Eurovision will come into focus as we get closer to Tel Aviv in May and this track will be no exception, given that it is the best one of the four (in my humble opinion).  "Hallelujah" now being a modern Jewish standard, we got a vocal and visual masterclass from Gali & Milk and Honey in 1979, she carrying the song perfectly and being joined by the others to provide some of the best ever harmonies heard at Eurovision.  This song supplies such an inspirational message in an incredibly pleasing and timeless way, so much so that I think that this could win any Eurovision it was entered in -  as for the Top 250, it reached the giddy heights of 160th...

12 Points - Marie Myriam "L'oiseau et l'enfant"

Now if anyone thinks that choosing songs that I have played on my Eurovision radio show so far was just a cunning ploy to have my all-time favourite ESC entry ever from 1977 as my 12 pointer then they'd be right!  To be honest, if I had gone with my 'best of the five years' plan that I did consider first off then Marie Myriam would still have been my number one anyway.  This was in my first show but I didn't say a huge amount about it because...well, I suppose that I am SO in love with every aspect of "L'oiseau et l'enfant" that mere words cannot explain why it holds such a massive hold on me.  There is no way that anything else is going to come along at Eurovision in the future and displace this song and so this got my 12, making me one of five fans that did so, and keeping this classic track a respectable 90th on the Top 250...

Just to show you that my word is my bond - that is how I voted and I was rewarded with SEVEN of the ten getting in the chart.  If I wanted chart cred then I would be picking Waterloo and Euphoria every year, along with Fuego for this year!  Talking about this year, Songfestival.be did a grand job of keeping score and provided all the stats as we went along - have a look here but I'll flag up some of the best bits too:
  • The usual influx of new entries from this year happened but not as many as some years - 27
  • Normally the winner of Eurovision shots straight into the top ten - Netta and "Toy" only reached 23
  • The year just gone (2017) saw the usual drop down the table for all bar Tijana Bogicevic who rose 42 places to 248
  • One artist got huge numbers of 12s in proportion of their final score - 73 for Michal Szpak (876 out of 1206, 73% of his total)
  • Baring one new entry, all of the top 20 stayed more or less the same from last year
  • Highest jump was for The Shin & Mariko - up 863 places to number 180 (from 1043)
