Cornelia Jakobs exudes the same sassy sexuality
in print as she does on stage...
Wednesday 28th was a very memorable day in London!
(c/o Dennis Wernersson)Going back almost a fortnight and yet it is still all clear in my head - not only did I get to see Cornelia sing at Colours Hoxton, along with the superb support Amber T, but I also got to experience the amazing Sam Ryder singing two songs alongside piano accompaniment by Sigala at St Pancras station! Lots of pictures to see below but first have a listen to show 217, where you will get one track from each:

So onto the pictures from what was originally going to be just watching Cornelia at her gig on the evening of Wednesday 28th September. The bonus was an email from Sam Ryder a couple of days beforehand, flagging up that he was going to sing a couple of songs at one of the public access pianos in St Pancras Station that same Wednesday. This event had been postponed from earlier in the year, so to have it happen on the day I happened to be in London was incredible! Songs sung were his collaboration with David Guetta and Sigala "Living Without You" plus "Somebody" - another major plus was to have Sigala there too:
This 18 year old performer is already a veteran of 250 gigs and I can definitely recommend catching her sets, whether that be supporting or on her own - details are here:
Amber did more than she was there for, warming up the crowd, but in a way none of us needed that! The anticipation of seeing Cornelia sing live was immense and the venue was packed - with hindsight, a far bigger place was needed. Ably supported by guitarist, drummer and musical backing, she gave us a wonderful set - I was at the back but I think the pictures give a decent flavour of the gig:
You can tell when you have a performer who has served their time on their musical journey before bursting into the big time - Cornelia was totally at ease with her set, joking with the crowd about not quite knowing the right 'English' words for what she wanted to say, and also interacting with her crew and her devoted fans who travelled around Europe to watch her. If you looked on Spotify to see her back catalogue, you will see everything that was on the set playlist - you can also see what I saw now via a YouTube video, recorded on the night...
I hope you enjoyed that but you didn't get the emotion and excitement for the video - that you can only get actually being at the gig itself. If I had known that there was going to be a livestream before I bought the ticket then I might have gone for the cheaper option, but I would have missed out on one of the best gigs I have been to in recent memory! "Weight Of The World" was my absolute favourite - the theme song for "Björnstad" on HBO Nordic - and that is what you heard on the show. The only way this whole experience could have been made any better was if I had been able to interview Cornelia but she didn't have enough time for that to happen. Overall Wednesday 28th September was a superb day and if you ever have the chance to see Cornelia or Amber T in concert, do so!
The rest of show flagged up what we know about Ireland's selection, how close we were at the time to the Host City being selected for 2023 (very, as it happened), plus some more information about who will be singing in Yerevan for JESC. We did have some favourite music for a couple of new members out of the LMBTO Eurovision Facebook Group:
Kelly chose Rita Guerra's "Deixa-me sonhar (só mais uma vez)" as her favourite ever Eurovision entry and Six Chix with "Only The Women Know" as her National Final selection...
Whereas Dennis went for Emmelie de Forest and "Only Teardrops" as his all-time Eurovision fav and a little known foursome from Sweden for his National Final entry! Okay, they weren't known as ABBA back in Melodifestivalen but I am sure that everyone recognised the Swedish version of "Ring Ring" for Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Björn and Benny. Great choices there and hope you both enjoy participating in everything that goes on within the group! The last thing to note from show 217 was the now regular segment of the LMBTO's Nation Favourite, this time for Armenia:

15 out of 41 votes for this lady meant an easy win for the 2022 entry that has taken the world by storm. Rosa Linn might 'only' have finished 20th in Turin with "SNAP" but now has the biggest hit from the Contest. Fingers crossed that she can follow this up with more big songs but at the very least us Eurovision fans can now point to her, Sam Ryder and Måneskin having a massive career boost from the Contest. I wonder if we will see renewed interest across the continent (and Australia) from artists who now see Eurovision as a way of getting your music out there, rather than it being a supposed millstone around their necks...
Show 218 has now become the edition where the Host City for Eurovision 2023 is first announced! We all know it is now Liverpool after the announcement on The One Show on Friday evening - I was at the start of the annual hilarities and fun of OGAE UK's Eurobash in Cardiff, in a pub called the Campion Tap, drinking with friends Joanne, Tom and Liverpudlian Layla, watching it all happen! I will talk more about all of that next time, along with playing you music connected to Eurobash itself, and in particular with the two special guests:
The songs for the top three of Eurostars will be there too!
